“Right here,” Katie said, motioning to the only house in sight. The man hadn't said anything since she'd talked him into coming with her and Katie was beginning to wonder if she should have just let him leave after all. Glancing at him again, though, he still seemed exhausted. And dirty. And probably hungry.
The truck rolled to a stop and all three passengers climbed out. The sun had only just begun to set when they arrived. Katie simpered at the man, who still wasn't looking at her. He obviously wasn't pleased, but they both knew a hot meal and a warm bed beat driving through the night in a filthy truck any day.

As far as first impressions go, the meeting between Katie and the stranger sitting next to her wasn't awful. He'd already shot half of her would-be rapists and was now driving them both to safety in the car they stole from said gang-members.
Well...she assumed he'd shot them. There wasn't anyone else around, much less anyone else with a high-powered rifle capable of sniping off gangs like the one he showed up with. Seven canned non-perishables in the cupboard. Enough for a few more days, but still too low to go without restocking.
A third of a jug of purified water, but no worries there. There was a creek nearby, and it was easy enough to filter.
A handful of dogfood left, all of which would be used later that day. That settled it. With the inventory complete, Katie tossed her pen and notebook on the counter and huffed. “Well, Bean,” she said, glancing down at the sleepy-eyed hound at her feet. “Looks like we're going into town today.”
